Since I was about 11 years old, I am practising calisthenics. This happened because I was underweight at that time. I started working my way up by simply doing 10 push-ups, sit-ups and 10 squats every morning, afternoon and evening. Untill I got to a point where I started moving forward and when I was about 16 years old I started doing freestyle push-ups and stuff, while I actually didn’t know that it was calisthenics what I was doing.
At one point I gained the right amount of weight because of calisthenics and right now I am 23 years old and finished the calisthenics club. I worked a couple of years to achieve that, because I thought for a contest it was good to have something to look up to and grow as an athlete.
Then I got a lot more inspiration to develop as an calisthenics athlete in the field of freestyle, strict and weighted calisthenics. Those are the things that I like the most.
What makes calisthenics such a great sport
Calisthenics is such a nice sport, because the goals you can set for yourself are endless. In this sport you can really determine your own style and decide how you want to move. In that, the challenges are unlimited. When you know how to do a muscle-up, you can start looking at different variaties in grip with the muscle-up and that’s how you can keep doing new stuff.
How accessible is calisthenics
It’s accessible for anyone. Elderly for instance, they can start by sitting and standing up from a chair, also known as easier squats. Also younger children can do it and become stronger with their own strength in a more friendly way.
Calisthenics talent in the Netherlands
I must say the talent in our country is really good. I got to experience that with the guys here in Holland at the Calisthenics Club, where I had my first contest, they were just as good as their competition. They ended up pretty high in this contest aswell.
If there would be a little more structure and a solid community, it would really become a sport in Holland and the level would only go up more.
This whole scene is really accessible, because everyone is just focussed on their own body. The things you accomplish are being encouraged, because for instance everyone knows how hard it is to do a muscle-up and the only one that’s able to improve that is you.
The community also is very friendly, everyone is helping eachother. Even in competitions there are people cheering you on, while those people might just be your competition.
Calisthenics as an Olympic sport
First of all when you look at calisthenics and all the different variations you have, it’s such a wide range. It’s not just freestyle or mobilty, there are weighted contests, freestyle contests, reps and sets, etc. There are so many different ways this sport is developing and proceeding. Because of that I think calisthenics is definitely a sport you would want to see at the Olympics.
